]]> The Improvisational Mind

March 11th, 2023 12-3pm

In this workshop we’ll introduce and practice key skills of awareness for dancing contact improvisation.

We’ll explore:

  • physical practices which help us connect with presence in the context of improvisational dance
  • awareness of our own body and its sense and capacities, especially sensing our quality of tone
  • deepening awareness of the dance space
  • understanding our center of gravity
  • tracking the center of gravity of others
  • cultivating our relationship with the floor, including practicing falling into the floor

Consent, Sharing Weight and Lifts in CI

April 8th, 2023 12-3pm

In this workshop we’ll explore models for consent, weight sharing and lifts in contact improvisation

We’ll introduce and practice:

  • cultivating our relationship with the floor, including practicing falling into the floor
  • models for nonverbal consent in Contact improvisation
  • fundamentals of sharing weight
  • fundamentals of lifting in CI including:
    • creating platforms and invitations
    • taking invitations and exploring platforms
    • coming out of lifts

]]> In the second quarter, we will expand on the foundation we developed in the first quarter through the concepts of the Skinosophere and Kinosphere from Nancy Stark Smith’s Underscore.

We’ll deepen our capacities to be with and understand our own body and movement, and telescope our awareness and movement out into exploring moving in space. We will focus on the meditation of self-connection and presence, telescoping awareness to expand and focus our attention, proprioception and other senses beyond sight, tracking bodies in space, and modulating tone, speed, and other aspects of movement among each other.

]]> In the third quarter, we’ll play with the foundations we developed in the first and second quarters through the exploration of improvisational scores to challenge and develop our skills and adaptability as well as practice common contact improvisation vocabulary including more fully developing weight-sharing with rolling point of contact and lift invitations.

We’ll develop an understanding of improvisational scores and hone common contact improvisation vocabularies, and then expand and break out of those boxes to keep our dance fresh and truly improvisational.

This workshop can be taken stand alone, or as part of the Contact From the Ground Up Series or the Pathways from the Ground Up Trimester.

]]> Within this two day workshop we will build on foundations from which participants can begin feeling comfortable navigating partnerships in the context of contact improvisation. We will begin with connection to our primary dance partner – ourselves. From a place of internal listening we will journey into touch with other bodies, delving into the interplay between internal and external awareness, called “telescoping awareness”.

A foundational element to coming into contact is that of listening through our tactile sense. We will be exploring how to utilize our bodies and movements as tools for listening and expressing while relating to other bodies. The aim is to offer participants methods to communicate boundaries and offer invitations through a somatic channel.
 
Besides harnessing the powers of nonverbal communication we will also go deep into some foundational elements of weight sharing. Some such elements will be: finding and grounding into our own center, moving from the center, connecting to other’s centers, exploring structures and how weight transfers through structures, supporting weight sharing through connection to the floor, the pouring in and pouring out of weight, and more.
We hope that by combining exercises involving communicating with the body and exercises exploring weight sharing, that participants feel safe and empowered in their ability to explore contact with others while taking care of their personal needs.

We re-member, re-meet, and re-discover our first dance partner: ourselves.

In this workshop we explore the foundation for your movement, exploration, expression, safety, and... your dance.

in a process of re-discovery, we question and discover - through movement, somatic and language - our relationship to dance, the limits of our movement, and where we find excitement and curiosity. This creates a foundation for listening and communication, for self knowledge, self care, communication of boundaries, and for your dance.

This workshop explores concepts and movement explorations integral to the practice of Contact Improvisation, done largely with one's self in a group. It includes personal and group exploration of concepts and ideas around dance through discussion and movement. In addition to solo movement, there will be partnered and group movement work.
